Composer.

Dr Peter Graham

Dr Peter Graham was born in Scotland and attributes his interest in band music to brass lessons by his father via the local Salvation Army Band. He later read music at Edinburgh and London Universities (Goldsmiths’ College), studying composition with Edward Gregson, and holds a Masters and PhD in composition. Following spells in New York and London in music publishing he is currently Reader in Composition at the University of Salford where he teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

He enjoys an international reputation as one of the leading composers of music for the British style brass band, with over 100 publications to his credit. The majority are published by the “family firm” Gramercy Music (UK), which he started with his wife Janey in 1994, and is named after the Gramercy Park area of Manhattan where the Grahams were resident in the early 1980’s.

His music for symphonic wind and concert bands has also been acclaimed. Harrison’s Dream, a commission by the United States Air Force Band, won the prestigious ABA/Ostwald Award for Original Composition for Symphonic Winds in 2002. He is in great demand as an arranger, working with organisations and artists ranging from the BBC to The Beautiful South. Major projects include the Grammy-nominated album Reflections in Brass, featuring Evelyn Glennie and the Black Dyke Band.

In January 2005 Dr. Graham  composed the march ‘Celebrate Rotary’ to commemorate the centenary of Rotary International, the world premier performance was in St. David’s Hall, Cardiff, played by Black Dyke Band.

Increasingly active as a guest conductor across Europe and North America. He also retains his early link with the Salvation Army, serving as a part-time consulting editor for their International Music Publications in London, England.
